Summary

I was late to diving into the body of Ray Bradbury's work, but I have been greatly enjoying every novel I've read。 He has a special way of making the mundane magical and poetic。 His style of writing is beautifully melancholy, but always includes heart。 This book is perfect for October and reminiscent of the Addams Family or The Munsters。 I was late to diving into the body of Ray Bradbury's work, but I have been greatly enjoying every novel I've read。 He has a special way of making the mundane magical and poetic。 His style of writing is beautifully melancholy, but always includes heart。 This book is perfect for October and reminiscent of the Addams Family or The Munsters。 。。。more

。。。more

Sunsets are loved because they vanish。 Flowers are loved because they go。 The dogs of the field and the cats of the kitchen are loved because soon they must depart。 These are not sole reasons, but at the heart of morning welcomes and afternoon laughters is the promise of farewell。 In the gray muzzle of an old dog we see goodbye。 In the tired face of an old friend we read long journeys beyond returns。 Bradbury's writing is always beautiful and evocative。 I didn't have much connection and feelin Sunsets are loved because they vanish。 Flowers are loved because they go。 The dogs of the field and the cats of the kitchen are loved because soon they must depart。 These are not sole reasons, but at the heart of morning welcomes and afternoon laughters is the promise of farewell。 In the gray muzzle of an old dog we see goodbye。 In the tired face of an old friend we read long journeys beyond returns。 Bradbury's writing is always beautiful and evocative。 I didn't have much connection and feeling to the characters in this novel/short story collection though。 This is his version of the Addams family- a oddball group of supernatural beings connected to a house and the young mortal boy who is their historian。 。。。more

45 years of strangeness。Prime freebie。 Suitable for teens and adults。 Some black and white pieces。 Ray Bradbury wrote strange tales that weren't traditional horror stories。 More like mood pieces。 Read also October Country if you like great writing。 45 years of strangeness。Prime freebie。 Suitable for teens and adults。 Some black and white pieces。 Ray Bradbury wrote strange tales that weren't traditional horror stories。 More like mood pieces。 Read also October Country if you like great writing。 。。。more

I started reading and before I knew it the story was over back to the dust returned。

Enjoyable story, though some of it did slow down to a crawl for me at times。 But there were also some beautifully written passages that I've earmarked to revisit。 Well worth a read and surprisingly the story has a bit of a sad twist that I didn't really see coming at first。 Enjoyable story, though some of it did slow down to a crawl for me at times。 But there were also some beautifully written passages that I've earmarked to revisit。 Well worth a read and surprisingly the story has a bit of a sad twist that I didn't really see coming at first。 。。。more

When I was in my teens/twentis, I read everything and anything i could find by Ray Bradbury, and enjoyed most of it。 ok, there were occasional disappointments like the number of times certain stories reappear over and over again in different collections, but generally, The Martian Chronicles and Something Wicked , for example, and all manner of short stories are firmly amongst my favorites ( heck, I went so far as to read a French version of Dark They Were and Golden-eyed when I was learning Fre When I was in my teens/twentis, I read everything and anything i could find by Ray Bradbury, and enjoyed most of it。 ok, there were occasional disappointments like the number of times certain stories reappear over and over again in different collections, but generally, The Martian Chronicles and Something Wicked , for example, and all manner of short stories are firmly amongst my favorites ( heck, I went so far as to read a French version of Dark They Were and Golden-eyed when I was learning French as school because it was the most interesting book our school had- I didn't do particularly well I have to admit)。 But somehow despite reading science fiction almost constantly for nearly 50 years now(Oh god) I hadn't even heard of this book until sometime in the mid 2010s, and iots never been a prirority for me。But now, 20 odd years after reading Stories by ray bradbury, I have finally read it, and it's wonderful。 Brief stories/chapters written throughout the 20th century but all hanging together really nicely, and creating a hugely entertaining book- One of his best, definitely。 。。。more

Life, death, Halloween。Ray Bradbury is a genius。 Simple 。 This book is Bradbury's love of family with all its strangeness and how Halloween and Autumn brings out the awesome idiosyncrasies of family。 A beautiful read。 Life, death, Halloween。Ray Bradbury is a genius。 Simple 。 This book is Bradbury's love of family with all its strangeness and how Halloween and Autumn brings out the awesome idiosyncrasies of family。 A beautiful read。 。。。more

I so desperately wanted to love this。。。sadly I do not。 I'm refraining from rating it with stars because I love Bradbury, the man, but only some of his stories。 Sigh。。。perhaps I'll revisit it again someday。 I so desperately wanted to love this。。。sadly I do not。 I'm refraining from rating it with stars because I love Bradbury, the man, but only some of his stories。 Sigh。。。perhaps I'll revisit it again someday。 。。。more

I know I've done this completely backwards, but this is the first Bradbury book I've read。 I've not yet read Fahrenheit 451 or Something Wicked This Way Comes, but I'm familiar with the premises。 That being said, this book has gotten me much more excited about reading more Bradbury。This book reads almost as a loosely connected collection of vignettes that get tied together more as the book progresses。 We start by being introduced to a family of dark, mythical beings, some unnamed, some ethereal, I know I've done this completely backwards, but this is the first Bradbury book I've read。 I've not yet read Fahrenheit 451 or Something Wicked This Way Comes, but I'm familiar with the premises。 That being said, this book has gotten me much more excited about reading more Bradbury。This book reads almost as a loosely connected collection of vignettes that get tied together more as the book progresses。 We start by being introduced to a family of dark, mythical beings, some unnamed, some ethereal, others more in line with living gargoyles or vampires。 They are celebrating an event known as the Homecoming in which this extensive family meets in what seems to be their familial home in Illinois。 The center of this book is a young human boy, Timothy, who has been adopted into this family。 He dreams of being like them, being able to fly or to live his life as a mystic dreamer, peering from behind others' eyes。 But his position in the family seems to be more of historian for some upcoming event。The surreal mind jumping in this book is reminiscent to me of The Neverending Story while some of the humanization of monsters smacks of Weaveworld or even Everville。 But the language that makes this book have a certain classic gravity is wholly unique to Bradbury (again, take that with a grain of salt; this is my first Bradbury)。 From the beginning and then continuing throughout, Bradbury writes with such turns of phrase and figurative language that the world, the characters, their lives and unlives are tangible in my mind's eye。Needless to say, I recommend this book。 I think that this one would be a good October book to read to children。 It is dark, certainly, but not dark enough to cause nightmares。 And under the veneer of horror and the macabre, there's a charming sheen of humanism and life lessons。 。。。more

As much as I have grown to appreciate Bradbury I really don't care for the poetic Halloween-style narration of the story。 With that said, I love the ideas presented here and there are a few moments of beauty。 As much as I have grown to appreciate Bradbury I really don't care for the poetic Halloween-style narration of the story。 With that said, I love the ideas presented here and there are a few moments of beauty。 。。。more

Ray Bradbury is a literary genius。 This collection to short stories ties reveals truths about humans and human nature and the frailty of human life。 From the Dust Returned is an excellent read from start to finish。

Nice culmination of un-finished shorts pulled together to create a larger narrative。 In nutshell, this is Bradbury's Addams Family。 It was originally intended to be a collaboration with Charles Addams that never came to be。 As the title suggests, this is Bradbury dusting off some old works and tying them together with the ever so fantastic Bradbury charm and wit that makes collections a cohesive story。 Must read for any Bradbury aficionados。 Nice culmination of un-finished shorts pulled together to create a larger narrative。 In nutshell, this is Bradbury's Addams Family。 It was originally intended to be a collaboration with Charles Addams that never came to be。 As the title suggests, this is Bradbury dusting off some old works and tying them together with the ever so fantastic Bradbury charm and wit that makes collections a cohesive story。 Must read for any Bradbury aficionados。 。。。more

The Charles Addams cover is perfect for this collection of stories that is sort of a novel。 I think I’ll need to revisit again to process it completely but that will be a joy to do because of Bradbury’s lyrical prose。

This is not the easiest read for people who don't have english as their first language。 But at the same time, the way this was written is what makes this book so wonderful and spooky and weird and unique in every good way。 The characters are memorable and lovely, the ideas are original and brilliant! And it is also a very cozy read。 It's quite perfect for the Autumn/Halloween season but it will stay with me for a while。 This is not the easiest read for people who don't have english as their first language。 But at the same time, the way this was written is what makes this book so wonderful and spooky and weird and unique in every good way。 The characters are memorable and lovely, the ideas are original and brilliant!
